Discussion:
[GWM] open office menubar & toolbar menus
(too old to reply)

when i'm using the GWM window manager, open office products (all of
them) are unusable because both menubar & toolbar menus flash briefly
and are _apparently_ obscured by the main window when selected w/mouse

if i select the menubar with <ALT>, the File (leftmost) menu is
hilited, an i can change the selected menu with <LEFT> and <RIGHT>
keys, but when i try to display a menu, using <DOWN>, the File menu is
selected (not displayed) and nothin' else happens

finally, the menuboxes in the toolbar (e.g., font selector) don't show
up when selected with the mouse, but i can change, e.g., the font
using arrow keys

i'm using the latatest and greatest GWM (1.8d), debian packaged, and
also ooffice is installed via the official debian package

i have not experienced such problems when using other window managers,
so i'd could think it's a gwm's bug, but similar problems with
mozilla's menus diappeared some time ago, so maybe it's just that
ooffice is (mozilla was) bugged and the other wm don't care enough to
do _exactly_ what requested...

if you can help, i'll be happy to add further details to the above
sketch

tia, gb

NB: f/u to *.x.apps

I'm not familiar with GWM whatsoever, but VTWM can exhibit the same
symptoms when AutoRaise is enabled (that is, when focus follows the
pointer, and windows are set to raise to the top of the window stack
when the pointer enters them).

If this sounds similar, it's a problem between the window manager and
the app's toolkit. Using VTWM, GTK and Motif both are culprit, and
I believe the Athena toolkit(s) are, too. At this point, I can only
suggest you turn "AutoRaise" off, if it's possible with GWM and I'm
anywhere on target.

If I spent some time to think of a software solution, I would, as I
maintain VTWM, and it's a niglet that bothers me when it occurs, too.

HTH,
Dave

no autoraise, but i have configured GWM so that focus _strictly_
follows mouse

i'll try setting focus on click, maybe...

i fiddled with GWM's configuration. looks like that setting
'no-set-focus' to t

1. subtly breaks everything else (it's usable, but it's different...)
2. apparently makes ooffice happy

i.e., menus pops up and usable, dialog boxes, etc etc etc BUT

ooffice takes the input focus and never ever releases it, and after
some amount of operaton holds it (focus) so tight that it's impossible
to get focus into ooffice's own subwindows --- i'm left with the
opportunity of going to the console and killing ooffice... when i
switch to X again, i have to restart GWM to have focus in my windows
